Rinko Di Mayo
posted: May 25, 2008Sunday, May 25, your not-so-humble announcer shall be en route to Ft. Myers to enjoy the three-day Memorial Day weekend - and a thanks to all our veterans and those who've paid for freedom with their lives, while my pea brain is thinking of it. More specifically, I'll be announcing for the Ft. Myers Derby Girls as they take on Broward County in Rinko de Mayo.
This preview will not be as detailed as some of my other previews, where I was/am a little bit more familiar with both teams. Part of the reason is that Broward County is such a new team at this point. In fact, an intraleague match-up last week and the Sunshine State Smackdown last month appears to be all of Broward County's bout experience so far. My non-Tampa-tag-team-partner-in-crime, Reverend Killjoy, announced for their intraleague bout last week, and I expect he'll have a lot more insight to offer tomorrow at the bout.
Ft. Myers is also a young team, but they clearly have the edge in interleague bout experience, having battled Tallahassee and Jacksonville at the Sunshine Skate tournament in February, and twice having faced Bradentucky this year (including their epic upset win in overtime at Bradentucky in March). Ft. Myers has also been a damn media darling lately, with their coverage of last month's home debut on three of the local networks and their recent article (and online video) with the Naples News. Alexorcist has been talking a great deal of smack about looking to hit bitches and break bones - is she going to back it up tomorrow? I was impressed last month by Kannibal Kate, and Lil Miss Slambags and Flyin Da Brie might just have an ideal situation in which to step up and show what they can do. And I can't help but be impressed by Velvet Revolter, who was last month's top scorer with 25 points.
Last month's Bradentucky at Ft. Myers bout was a grudge match - plain and simple. Sunday's match is a much different tone, with two young teams showing what they can do. In this case, I have to go with the experience edge, which is clearly with Ft. Myers. Vince's prediction: The Ft. Myers Palm City Punishers win.

Ft Myers 98
Broward 90
